Bosnia and Herzegovina is known for its socialist modernist architecture, especially in and around Sarajevo. Monumental public buildings, housing blocks, mosaics and memorials reflect the political ambitions and design language of the twentieth century, and they remain an important part of the urban landscape today.
Sarajevo contains some of the most representative examples of socialist modernist architecture in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Government complexes, cultural halls, transport infrastructure and memorial spaces illustrate how modernism and state planning shaped the capital and other major cities.
Across Bosnia and Herzegovina, mosaics, monuments and decorative art remain key elements of this heritage. They were created to communicate ideas about progress, labor, technology and collective identity, and they still define many public spaces.
