The DOSAAF mosaic in Chișinău is installed on the facade of a shooting range complex originally founded in 1957 under the name Republican Sports Club DOSAAF. The site was part of the broader DOSAAF system of the USSR, which provided paramilitary and technical training for civilians in aviation, shooting and basic military skills. In 1989, a new indoor complex was built at the site. This included an administrative building and three shooting halls measuring 50 meters, 25 meters and 10 meters. The mosaic was completed the same year on the exterior of this newly added structure. It covers a large portion of one side of the building and was designed to reflect the facility's military training function.
The mosaic begins with a circular emblem on the left side featuring the Cyrillic inscription ДОСААФ СССР. Inside the emblem are a red star with a hammer and sickle, a golden airplane above and crossed rifles below. These elements represent the three primary training areas supported by DOSAAF: aviation, army and marksmanship. The emblem is surrounded by radiating bands of gold, red and white tile. To the right of the emblem are stylized representations of three Soviet military flags. These include the Red Army flag with a red background and gold hammer and sickle, the Soviet Navy flag in white and blue with a red star and red hammer and sickle, and the Soviet Air Force flag in yellow, orange and blue. These flags symbolize the armed branches that DOSAAF prepared civilians to support.
The far right section of the mosaic depicts armed Soviet soldiers in shooting stances. On the left, two soldiers are shown kneeling and crouching while aiming rifles. On the right, a standing soldier is also shown aiming. A circular target motif rendered in red and beige tiles appears near the figures, emphasizing the building's original use for rifle training.
In 2002, the club was reorganized as the Central Sports Club of the National Army. It remains in operation under the name shooting center of the National Army and continues to host national and international competitions. Moldova's top sport shooters and national teams train at this location. The mosaic remains perfectly intact and is one of the most complete surviving public artworks with a hammer and sickle in Moldova.
The mosaic is located very close to the Eternity Memorial Complex in Chișinău. As it is installed on the exterior facade of the building, the artwork can be viewed freely from the street.
