The mosaic titled Fire Is in Good Hands was completed in 1979 by Georgian artist Givi Kervalishvili for the Ortachala fire station in Tbilisi. Created during the late Soviet period, the work reflects the regime's policy of incorporating monumental public art into civic architecture. This mosaic was designed to convey the symbolic role of the fire service as a protector of urban life and heritage.
The composition centers on a heroic firefighter figure, standing in a commanding pose and controlling fire. Surrounding the firefighter are stylized renderings of prominent Tbilisi landmarks, including the Metekhi and Sioni churches, the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theater, the Sports Palace, Dynamo Stadium, the funicular station and the main railway station. Executed in the late Soviet monumental modernist style, the mosaic features simplified geometric shapes, rigid structuring and a restrained color palette.
Since Georgia's independence, the mosaic has not been removed or altered. It remains intact and visible on the side wall of the operational fire station behind the Ortachala central bus station. Its ideological content is now viewed in a historical context rather than as active propaganda.
The mosaic is located on the side of the fire station at Vakhtang Gorgasali Street 34. As it is far from the city center, it is recommended to take a taxi or drive there, and parking is available. You can try asking the firemen to see the mosaic up close, but most likely they will only let you photograph it through the fence just outside.
