On the side of an apartment building facing Bulevardul Decebal, at the corner next to Serghei Lazo Park in Chișinău, a mosaic shows a hand holding a red star. The work was created by Moldovan-Soviet artist Aurel David.
Following its adoption as an emblem of the Soviet Union, the red star became a symbol of communism around the world. During the Soviet period, mosaics like this were commonly placed on residential buildings and public structures as decorative public art.
During the Soviet period, today’s Bulevardul Decebal was known as Ulitsa Timoshenko, named after Semyon Timoshenko, a Soviet military commander, Marshal of the Soviet Union, and one of the most prominent Red Army commanders during the Second World War.
The mosaic is still clearly visible today on the side of the building next to the park. It remains in excellent condition, and the red star and the raised hand are still striking elements of the composition.
The artwork is located close to the statue of Serghei Lazo inside the park that carries his name.
